Common Questions

You need to prove a monthly income of at least €3,480 (4x the Portuguese minimum wage). This must be active income from remote work or freelancing — not passive income like pensions or dividends. You also need savings of at least €10,440. If applying with family, add 50% per spouse and 30% per child.
The D8 (Digital Nomad) Visa is for people with active remote income — employees, freelancers, and contractors working for foreign companies. The D7 (Passive Income) Visa is for people with passive income like pensions, rental income, or dividends. If you work remotely, the D8 is the right choice. The D8 also has higher income requirements (€3,480/month vs €870/month for D7).
Yes! Your spouse, children, and dependent parents can apply for accompanying visas at the same time. Their visas will have the same duration as yours. You'll need to demonstrate additional income: +50% for a spouse and +30% per dependent child. Family members get the same residency rights as the main applicant.
If you stay in Portugal for more than 183 days per year, you become a tax resident and must declare worldwide income. Portugal's standard progressive tax rates go up to 48%. The NHR regime with tax benefits ended for new applicants in 2024. Note: Crypto gains are tax-free if held for more than 365 days. We recommend consulting a tax advisor for your specific situation.
The D8 Visa typically takes 30-90 days to process after you submit your application at a Portuguese consulate. Once approved, you have 4 months to enter Portugal. After arrival, you'll apply for your residence permit at AIMA, which takes additional time. Total timeline from application to residence card is usually 4-6 months.
Yes — if you choose the long-term residency visa option (not the temporary stay visa). After 5 years of legal residency in Portugal, you can apply for permanent residency or citizenship. You'll need to pass a basic Portuguese language test (A2 level) and maintain a clean criminal record. Portuguese citizenship grants you an EU passport.
